Text vs. Call: Why Customers Prefer to Message First

Aug 19, 2026

A lot of homeowners will not call a stranger while they are at work, in a meeting, or standing in a wet basement with one hand free. They will fill a short form or send a text. That is not them being flaky. That is how people start conversations now.

A click-to-call button still matters. Some people want a voice. Many want a paper trail they can glance at later: address, photos, a window. Text handles that without a ten-minute hold.

If your site only offers a phone number and an email, you are asking them to use the two channels they like least for a first reach-out. Give them a form that becomes an SMS to you. They message. You reply from Messages. The conversation feels like every other text they already send.

You can still call once you have the job details. First contact is the hurdle. Make that hurdle a message, not a cold call they are not ready to take.

The companies that insist “just call us” will keep getting the people who like to talk. The rest of the market is already typing.
